Opening our doors to the public on 09 July 2019, our new harvest store – The Whippet in Melville – will offer visitors fresh produce harvested straight from our rooftop farm. The Whippet in Melville Harvest Store is part of our bigger dream to introduce a truly farm-to-table experience to this amazing suburb, while also decreasing our carbon footprint. The Whippet is all about having a conscience, authenticity, and a sense of community.
Melville visitors and customers will be able to purchase fresh herbs and vegetables from our harvest room. And to make your experience even better, we have also expanded our retail offering by introducing homemade korrelkonfyt, lemon cordial and grapefruit gin salt. Once the rooftop farm is grown and producing, it will supply both the Linden and Melville stores with fresh ingredients to create the dishes that are not only sustainable, but delicious.
We are not only passionate about coffee and good food, but also about design and architecture. This passion is what led us to an old art deco hotel, formerly known as the Melville Mansions on the corner of 7th Street and 3rd Avenue, which we now call our second home. Each of our shop designs are inspired by the surrounding neighbourhood’s history and heritage, falling in line with our love for Joburg and each unique suburb we call home. The design of the Melville store was guided by a vision to use materials that are handmade, authentic, raw and honest to convey the humble concept of a harvest store: a space to experience honest, raw, fresh food in a space that reflects the same ‘goodness’.
The Whippet in Melville Harvest Store is about three times the size of the original Linden premises and also features a glass installation (plant wall), which showcases many handpicked cuttings from the Melville Koppies. The look and feel of this new space was conceptualized by Kassa Studio.
